One reason for my posting the issue was that there are a lot of problems on the user forum where "Resetting the profile" fixes the problem. I wondered if corruption of registrymodifications.xcu was a possible cause. For example, OpenOffice freezes with regularity at https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=71273.
