It may output some error message (may be a library that can't be loaded, etc.) The terminal is Terminal.app; in the terminal you have to write the command to execute OpenOffice and press Enter. The command is something like /Applications/OpenOffice.app/Contents/MacOS/soffice (if OpenOffice is in the default location).
