Seriously though, adding an exception for "al." is also a partial solution.
For example, if the phrase "et al." appears at the end of a sentence, then the
next word does need to be capitalized:

The protein was discovered by Wong et al.  Later, ...

The only solution would be to change the way Writer detects new sentences. 
It'd have to detect new sentences after a period and two spaces, instead of a
period and one.
