Well, I was able to reproduce the problem again. The current situation with my
Ubuntu 18.4 (Gnome3) on a Lenovo W540 looks like this:

While the classic X11 display server is in use, OpenOffice may crash when a
table control is inserted. It freezes when an existing table control is loaded
and getting the focus.

While the optional Wayland display server is in use, table controls work
normally. With Wayland certain drop-down toolbar buttons (such as line style
drop-down in text table toolbar) crash the entire desktop environment down to
the login screen if and only if the toolbar is floating.
LibreOffice keeps all toolbars docked when Wayland is active. It is possible to
move them along the frame borders but it is impossible to make them float.
