Back then we thought those YAMLs would be tiny but turns out not to be the case under extreme circumstances. Also I disliked the idea of storing metadata about another RocksDB (checkpoint) inside a RocksDB. And now that defrag feature has shipped it would be a much bigger effort to migrate it to a DB.
