Let's commit -combined then.
It includes [~comnetwork]'s test, adds the safety check when clipping, and
changes the sample method as [~jamestaylor] suggests.
If someone constructs a String with an explicit 0 char in it, they better know
what they're doing; but at least it should not cause an error at query time.
Unless I hear objections I will make this so, soon.
