In general, I agree completely with Mike Drob's comment 
[here|https://github.com/apache/solr/pull/804#discussion_r884977847], which 
seems related:

bq. if we're using HTTP client because SolrClient can't handle these endpoints, 
then let's fix Solr Client to be better instead of trying to band aid around it

But I guess I'm assuming what requirement/goal you're trying to meet with the 
raw-request idea, so I'll hold off until you've had a chance to speak to 
motivation a bit...
