Sorry I wasn't watching this issue in Jira so didn't see some of the comments.

So with regard to [~Tiziano.DE]'s comment, I think what's happened there is 
that I have accidentally used the offset for the RMI port (which is 
SOLR_PORT+10_000), instead of the offset for the zookeeper port 
(SOLR_PORT+1_000).

The checks for the RMI port look okay,
