I wonder if having a new component (idea already mentioned above) that is a
compound of {{QueryComponent}} could solve concerns w.r.t. not impacting on
{{QueryComponent}} *and* allow for distributed support (fusion happening on the
coordinator) at the same time.
SOLR-13511 previously added support for customising {{ResponseBuilder}} -- if a
compound response builder contained multiple result lists then a compound query
component could combine them at the end of the processing.
https://github.com/apache/solr/pull/2597 has some scribbles.
