We overuse/abuse doctests in this critical module because we have no way to add
separate tests like in a "normal" Python project.
This module is key to our build and we should have a proper way to add tests
that are not mixed in with the code.
The tests should be run regularly as part of RI, of course. This will relieve
pressure from the doctests and allow us to move things that arguably are a bit
too verbose/noisy from there and into the standalone test files.
