shane knapp commented on SPARK-11255:
-------------------------------------

the current version of R on our workers is:
R version 3.2.1 (2015-06-18) -- "World-Famous Astronaut"

my basic requirements for the workers are:

* keep the absolute minimum versions of any software package on the system
* don't build from source unless absolutely, mission-critically necessary
* see both points above :)

things go from "really easy" to "starting to get complicated" when
installing things from source and managing them in a build
environment.

also note that our entire staging environment is gone due to fire, and
we'll have to be doing some testing on live builds and systems. those
replacement systems might not make it to us before december... now
we're getting from "starting to get" to "actually" complicated.

i sit about 10' from [~shivaram] and we had a quick chat about this
today and we'll be following up tomorrow... i'll also compile some R
versions in a VM and see how well they play together. we'll explore
this from many angles. :)

> R Test build should run on R 3.1.1

> Test should run on R 3.1.1 which is the version listed as supported.
> Apparently there are few R changes that can go undetected since Jenkins Test
> build is running something newer.
