I know, we'd talked about _not_ making cross-cutting code cleanup changes on
the grounds it made back-ports harder. (CC [~joshrosen]) I'd still like to
float a series of changes of this form for 2.x, since back-porting across major
versions is less likely. I'd like to focus on changes that are actually
functional only -- possibly improves performance, fixes a bug, or significantly
improves readability.
PR coming with several commits for different types of changes for discussion.
Some, or all of these may be deemed not worth it.
