[~lichangleo] Your patch looked good. There were some minor nits which I 
noticed and fixed in this latest version:
   - whitespace cleanup
   - more clear error message in exception
   - removed unused vars in new unit test and also added an assert to verify 
that the thrown exception was the actual one that was being tested for.
