Project E.R. (environmental rescue)
Electronic Field Trip
A standards-led curriculum supported by NASA's Earth Science Education Program
(Grades 3 to 8)

Send students into the field with Field Museum scientists as their guides!

Ecosystems are changing rapidly, and plants and animals are becoming extinct at an alarming rate.  What can your students do to protect the planet and the animals and plants that live on it?  To find out, join Project E.R. (environmental rescue).

Through a broadcast and online curriculum, the Project E.R. e-field trip turns students into stewards of the environment.  We invite you and your students to join us on a rescue expedition to ecosystems where Field Museum scientists are working to understand and conserve biodiversity.  Students will investigate how to balance the needs of people with those of the broader ecosystems of which they are only a part.

On a Mission to Save the Earth
With Field Museum botanist Patrick Leacock and anthropologist Sibel Kusimba as guides, students become part of a rescue team in the one-hour Project E.R. broadcast produced by WYCC/ PBS Chicago 20. Students journey to three ecosystems where they will:
·       Explore with Dr. Gregory Mueller how the ecosystem of Illinois’ Swallow Cliff Woods Forest Preserve is responding to restoration
    efforts;
·   Study with Dr. Bruce Patterson how lions in Kenya’s Tsavo National Park behave and interact with their ecosystem; and
·       See how educator Dan Brinkmeier is working with the Cofan indigenous community in Ecuador to protect river turtles.

Preserving Diversity
The Project E.R. online curriculum features scientific investigations and online resources.  With this standards-led curriculum, students continue their rescue expedition through a series of projects and activities by:
·       Identifying the living and non-living components that make up an ecosystem;
·    Charting the relationships among plants, animals, and people in an ecosystem; and
·    Examining how people impact an ecosystem and how they can work to minimize this impact.

Cost
Project E.R., made possible by a grant from NASA's Earth Science Education Program, is available for FREE to all schools and organizations.
