Applied Zoology for Teachers July 9, 11, 12, 13 (note no class 7/10) Grades 6-12, $210 (fee includes lunches) 6 ceu's or 2 hours optional graduate credit Where better to learn some basics of zoology: mammalogy, ornithology, primatology, ecology, and more, than at Brookfield Zoo! Curatorial staff, researchers and education staff will lecture, discuss and explore with you! We'll focus on information and interesting activities that you'll be able to use with your students. Work with a team to develop curriculum ideas to share with the class. Species Survival Plans July 30 and August 1 Grades 6-10, $85.00 3 ceu's or 1 hour optional graduate credit Experience Brookfield Zoo's newest CONNECTIONS curriculum unit designed to study endangered species and zoo programs the work to save them. We'll study the major causes of species decline, observe endangered animals that live here at Brookfield Zoo, visit with some of the staff responsible for their care, sample activities that illustrate causes of species endangerment and discuss things that we all can do to live harmoniously with the natural world. Fee includes the Species Survival Plans curriculum unit and a set of full color photo posters. An Educator's Evening in the Wild September 28 (5:30 to 11:00 p.m.) All grades, $70 5 cpdu's Just for you: our second annual educator's event, with new activities and tours for 2001! The evening includes a sunset safari Tram tour, dinner, two behind-the-scenes or after-hours tours of animal exhibits, a guided night walk in the zoo, and choices of hands-on, informational and creative professional development sessions. Bring a friend, spouse or colleague (teacher or not) and sample Brookfield Zoo's teacher activities and great food, meet animal care staff in their work areas, and explore the zoo after dark. Fee includes dinner, tours, materials and a souvenir t-shirt. Changing Seasons October 6 and 13 Grades Pre-K-2, $85 3 ceu's or optional 1 hour graduate credit Focus on the seasonal cycles of nature and learn about ways animals and plants live with seasonal change. Staff will discuss groundhogs, wolly bear caterpillars, and other seasonal forecasters and you'll have the chance to dress up as hibernators, migrators and winter food finders. Participants receive a complete CONNECTIONS curriculum packet with a variety of activities, including a slide set for use in the classroom. Behavior Matters October 19 (4:30 to 10:00 p.m.) and October 20 (8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) Grades 6-12 $92.00 (fee includes Friday dinner) 2.5 ceu's or optional 1 hour graduate credit Experience the science of behavioral observation, and discover how to engage your students in research during a zoo trip, in your school or at home! Participants receive the CONNECTIONS curriculum unit (developed in cooperation with Northwestern University) including activities, a CD-ROM, and a videotape. Exploring Desert Communities November 3 (at Brookfield Zoo) and November 10 (at the Chicago Botanic Garden) Grades K-8; $85.00 3 ceu's or 1 hour optional graduate credit They're home to camels and coyotes, families of clever meerkats, porcupines and ardwolves, and even penguins! Learn about one of the world's most challenging biomes: deserts, as we focus on the flora and fauna adapted to life in the arid regions of the world. We'll learn about the plants, animals and peoples of these ecosystems and participate in activities designed to teach and evaluate your students. Africa: the Land, the People and the Animals November 16 (4:30 to 10:00 p.m.) and November 17 (8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) Grades 4-6; $92.00 (fee includes Friday dinner) 2.5 ceu's or 1 hour optional graduate credit The continent of Africa is home to more than 50 countries, a wide variety habitats, dozens of peoples who speak hundreds of dialects, and a wealth of animal and plant species. In this interactive class, you'll observe African animals and explore the African exhibits at Brookfield Zoo and sample student activities designed to aid in the study of this incredible continent. Participants receive the curriculum unit, including activities, study prints, and a video. Animals of the Night January 19 and 26, 2002 Grades K-5, $85.00 3 ceu's or 1 optional hour graduate credit Large eyes, a keen sense of smell and touch, and echolocation are some of the adaptations for the animals that swoop, fly, dart, flutter and scurry through the night. Learn about the amazing animals (and plants!) that populate the darkness. We'll have games and activities and a set of slides of your favorite animals (and some you may not know about.)
