I tried strace, and saw that mbsync stumbled over a file in this
maildir that was zero sized. This for sure happened due to a hard
freeze of my computer and due to the fact that I use XFS. Mbsync should
better report that error, though.

Here is the corresponding strace output:

I deleted this file and now mbsync works again.
