I know it sounds silly, but it seems that this happened right after
installing a KDE desktop and its dependencies. mbsync runs every 20
minutes and the first core-dumps were generated right after those
packages were installed. No packages were upgraded in this process.
in principle, it could be that a (second) xoauth sasl plugin was
installed as a dependency. if xoauth use wasn't intended in the first
place, you can suppress it using AuthMechs. otherwise ... dunno.
but maybe it's just coincidence, and marton's explanation is spot-on.
