Yes, a nice tool I have encountered recently that uses
ghostscript (gs) behind the scenes is called pstotext
http://research.compaq.com/SRC/virtualpaper/pstotext.html
.  I haven't played with it much but so far it seems
pretty good for simple PDFs, anyway...
