but, i could create a new PDF document within the JSP without any problem.

    Document document = new Document (PageSize.A4);
    PdfWriter writer = PdfWriter.getInstance (document, new DataOutputStream
(response.getOutputStream()));
    form.toPDF (document, ...);

i'm curious as to why that worked...
