This isn't really an answer to your question, but I'm currently using iText with 
WebObjects 5.2, and have implemented returning the pdf directly, writing to a file 
then redirecting, and a cool "Please wait..." progress bar page.  ;-)  I'd be happy to 
share if you need any code snippets.
