that's very helpful, thanks, but you'll have to excuse my ignorance here
(having one of those days! :)

In the example wide_table.java, you tell the table to write at x:50,
y:650

  table.writeSelectedRows(0, 5, 0, -1, 50, 650, cb);

that's fine if you know your y value (in this case 650), but what
happens if you don't?  I'll be writing other things to the doc before
the table (headers, phrases, other tables) and these will vary in size
from report to report.  Is there any way to determine the current ypos
of a document (i.e. the point at which the next element added will
start)?

See the example wide_table.java at itextpdf.sf.net. To do what you want
you'll have to place the table at a precise position and you'll need
PdfPTable.
