Are there known restrictions in this function? For example, I am trying to override the widths of an embedded TT fonts.

Do NOT do this, all hell will break loose - or at least you will NOT get the results you expect....
If you want custom widths, then create your own font with your own name and embed that data. Do NOT try to "hack" existing fonts - standard or otherwise.
