Can you point me to how I can get started writing the little code to insert images
already compressed using schemes not supported in iText?

Meaning you've already compressed them with a JBIG2
compressor? Make sure you are talking about JBIG2 and NOT JBIG - they are
different...

The answer is no, but if you already have them compressed, writing
a little code to just "insert them" into the PDF will be easy...
