It's probably a good idea to analyze first the results of the automated tool you used and think about what you're saying. I do a search for "pdf" case sensitive, whole word and I only get what I want, there's no confusion.
I avoided the question because I also didn't feel the need to change the variable in this case. But I think some of the older classes could use some refactoring. For instance: when I wrote the first classes I used alignment() instead of getAlignment(). Maybe we could deprecate the variable() methods and refactor the library to use getVariable().
But I am rather reluctant to start this (even if I had the time to do it), because I fear the possible side-effects.
If it isn't broken, don't fix it.
