OK. Acrobat's built-in functionality or something else?

        It is the way that iText works - there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
wrong with it.

        BUT their stuff ends up in the "Contents" area - the sizes
should be equivalent (or pretty close).

        You could modify the iText sources to address the situation. You
could attempt to optimize after flattening.
