That's odd, because internally these methods are almost identical.

cb.saveState();
cb.concatCTM(1, 0, 0, 1, x, y);
barcode.placeBarcode(cb, null, null);
cb.restoreState();
or
PdfTemplate tp = barcode.createTemplateWithBarcode(cb, null, null);
cb.addTemplate(tp, x, y);
Please post your questions to the mailing list instead of to me

Where did you download the 1.3 version from?
As far as I know there's a link to the 1.3.6 jar on the iText download
page.
All files of this release can be found on SourceForge:

Thanks for your patience Paulo,
I was doing something dumb... I thought I had to set the page size to
the
200" max and then apply the UserUnit as scale factor. 'doh!

Internal linking is not supported in the RTF output.

I downloaded from the 1.3 download link at
http://www.lowagie.com/iText/download.html
I see now, below the "Download the Library" table and buried in a
paragraph, a link to 1.3.6. Not easy to find - I assumed that what
was offered under "download" is all that was offered for people
needing an officially released package. Is this release stable,
suitable for production use? The way the versioning is being done
(from what I see) is not what I'm accustomed to from other projects.

I hardly ever read my own website, but you're right.
It isn't that clear. Maybe I should update the site.
