I tried JPEDAL...we have it licensed for other things...it has some bugs that are, let's say, slow to get fixed...
 
I did try Ghostscript directly...can't remember if I got really good results there...

         If you want good thumbnails for PDF from Java, try our
PSServices (http://www.apago.com).  Also, calling Ghostscript
directly instead of going through ImageMagick doesn't hurt.

         Native Java solutions such as JPEDAL are also a good way to go.
