That's very good news! Any idea about when the book will be available for orders? about the price?

I'm sorry but I don't know...

This is off-topic, but maybe it's interesting for other developers
who are dreaming of writing a book.

When you have a F/OS library that gains importance, you get on
the radar of different publishers in the ICT world. The first contacts
are always informal. In november 2004 I was contacted from
somebody from O'Reilly who asked me to write some articles,
they wanted to test if I would be able to write a book.

At that moment I didn't have the time to write articles, nor did I feel
'ready' to write a book on iText. However, I didn't let go of the idea,
and by the time I was contacted by Manning Publications (I think that
was in april 2005), I had changed my mind.
Especially because I really like the 'in Action' series.
(And now I can add: because Manning gives great support
to its writers.)

Manning asked me to write a Book Proposal (about 10 pages)
and that proposal was reviewed by different people in the industry.
Based on those reviews, I got a contract with five milestones.
- Chapter 1 (4 reviewers)
- 1/3 of the book (15 reviewers)
- 2/3 of the book (10 reviewers)
- 3/3 of the book (?)
- production version

I have now reached the fourth milestone.
I am expecting a GO or a NO GO tonight.
Or maybe a 'GO, on condition that...'.
If I get a GO, an extra month (or two?) will be
needed to have the book reviewed and prepared
for production.
Once the production version is ready, it normally
takes another two (or three) months before it's
available in the book store.

As you see, there are still some unknown parameters;
I kind of expect a 'GO, on condition that...' and then
it will depend on the time I get to meet the conditions.
If I get a GO, I'll still have to work on the manuscript
to integrate the suggestions made by the reviewers;
their feedback in the first two review rounds was very
valuable to me!

Anyway, congratulations for this book, that I'll be one of the first
to purchase for sure!

Thanks! I will keep you informed.
I hope I'll have good news after the weekend.
In my dayjob I switched to working half time for
half a year so that I could work on the book.
The last few months I have been working almost
7 days on 7, sometimes 10 hours a day to get the
book ready. Now I'm back doing my 'regular job'
and I feel like I am kicking off from an addiction ;-)

As for the price, in one of the review questions
the reviewers are asked if they would pay about
$50 for the book, but I don't know if that's the price
that will be on the book eventually. I've never thought
much about money. I now realize that I even forgot
to ask Manning to pay the advance that was promised
in the contract...
br,
Bruno
