Yes, that's a nice easy solution for you...AT LEAST for those cases that ImageMagick can handle, which is only 5 of the 11 different colorspaces supported by PDF. So for DeviceGray, DeviceCMYK, DeviceRGB, ICCBased and Indexed (of those) - you should be fine with IM. However, with all the others, you will need to convert yourself.
- I haven't thought as far as to what format I really want yet.
TIFF is the only one that will be the lossless. All others will involved some data loss via colorspace conversion or lossless algorithms.
