The attached program, jpdfmain.java, produced a pdf

written in the color black.

You have a line of text in RGB colorspace which you are EXPECTING to represent black. For screen, this is probably OK (though not great) - it is however, a REALLY BAD assumption for print-based output where colors are based on CMYK and/or Spot colors.

I would recommend that for something you KNOW is black - use DeviceGray colorspace.

However, when the document
is looked at in Adobe Acrobat 7.0, (menu items-
tools/print production/output preview) - see attached
file 0604031557.jpg - the text does NOT consist only
of black.

You are misunderstanding how that feature works. But, without going into large diatribe on color theory, etc. Suffice it to say that it relates to the comments above and if you follow my advice, you'll be fine.

After applying a conversion process within Acrobat
(menu items - tools/print production/convert colors) -
see attached file 0604031600.jpg - the text does
consist only of black. The modified pdf file is
test01fixed.pdf.

You converted to CMYK - you could also do that for the your black text, but it owuld take up 4x the space in the PDF.
