Hi,
if you use Ghostscript you should consider to use the pscolor application in the contrib directory of ghostscript sourcecode. Tell me if you have problems to compile it. For a simple inputfile I get a analyzing throughput of 20-30 pages per second. Of course this depends on the complexity of the input file and on your hardware.

I think about it... but i cannot manage text color... maybe the simple methods 
would be convert each page into bmp and analyzing it. But it seems like a dirty 
procedure.

The most elegant would be intercept printer setting directly on gs... but it's 
not a itext question.
