The functionality I need seems to be present in ghostscript. Carsten Hammer wrote pscolor as a contrib programme for ghostscript (in the contrib folder of the source distro) which I should be able to adapt (with great difficulty but that is my fault for never learning c properly!) to get what I want. There may be some problems with this approach, and gs 8.50 seemed to bork at heaps of my pdfs if they weren't "optimised" by acrobat, but the results look exactly like what we want. If I can get something usable I will post a link. Cheers Antoine -- This is where I should put some witty comment. Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
