You have to consider what's in the PDF and what is used to display the
PDF. linux.pdf was created with font Helvetica (Type1) not embedded and
windows.pdf was created with font Arial (TrueType) not embedded. As the
fonts are not embedded whatever viewer used for displaying the PDF must
find a suitable font to show. In Windows both PDF equate to the same
font, Arial. In Linux it would be something else. In ghostscript it
would be one of the URW fonts. Acrobat 5 and later rely on the OS to
supply the fonts. Acrobat 4 had the Helvetica font to display and you
could even use them to create a PDF with Helvetica embedded (license
issues aside). None of the PDFs have embedded fonts.
