Agreed, it should be a trivial change. I'll take a look at making such a change later this weekend and submitting it as a patch. This approach would be a reasonable solution for my application and will hopefully have value to other users, too.
I also agree that a better solution would be to change the drawImage handling. It's also not quite as trivial a change. I doubt I'll have time this weekend (or in the near future) to submit a patch for that change. However, I'll try to take a look at it and see what I can do.
