The binary image output stuff, I'll gladly take.
The situation with the optimisation is that I don't actually use the library, 
so my primary interest is maintainability. Currently this is given and if you 
can keep the changes clean, while improving the memory use, of course the 
change will be added. For that second patch it might be back and forth a few 
times, until I'm happy, but as long as I feel I can easily maintain the 
results, I see no real obstacles.
