You refer to the pdfhacks site, and then you ask a question that is
answered on that very same site: http://www.pdfhacks.com/watermark/
In case you didn't know: pdftk IS iText (but compiled with GCJ).
Note that this is explained in the book "PDF Hacks" as well as in
the book "iText in Action".
