Dear all, Last year, I founded 1T3XT BVBA in Europe to support iText, the free/open source Java-PDF library. More recently, another company was started in America with my blessing: iText Software LLC (http://www.itextsoftware.com/ ), which sells commercial licenses for iText.
As a developer, you might wonder why companies would want to buy a license. I've compiled the most important reasons that were forwarded to me over the years: (1) Companies want to be released from the terms of the Mozilla Public License (MPL): a. no requirement to redistribute the code. b. no need to include the iText copyright or Mozilla license with the product. c. no need to disclose modifications. (2) permission to change the producer information when using iText (see File > Document Properties > Producer in Adobe Reader). (3) priority tech support. We all know the support on the mailing list is good, and we hope to keep it that way, but some questions can't be answered due to lack of time. By buying a license, you can get your question higher on the priority queue AND we offer a way to post your questions privately (this can be important if you need to send a faulty PDF document containing confidential information). (4) we also offer indemnification for IP and patent infringement. In short: 1T3XT BVBA is the company that will make sure that iText continues to exist as a Free/Open Source Software library; iText Software LLC is the company that will make iText available under a Commercial license.
