Did you read the book? Or did you only look at the examples?

Because if you've read the book, you may have overlooked this: "This 
functionality is old, and it was never completed. It was written to 
serve a specific purpose, and once the XML parsing functionality was 
sufficient for the project I was working on, further development in this 
area was stopped."

As you know you are using iText for free. This is only possible if 
people get paid to develop functionality. As soon as this "payment" 
stops, development stops.

The choice you have now, is to either pay for further development, or 
stick to using functionality that was paid for by somebody else.
