I guess it makes sense to try to use the latest version of iText. And as for the minority of ungrateful users, it has to do with the understanding of the philosophy of open source software. One can be competent enough only to use an Api whilst the other will be able to modify it an/or contribute to it. The set of people that expect immediate assistance on issues that they face obviously do not get the complete picture.
The last i heard from 'Paulo' on this was that, this feature was not implemented completely.
