The act of signing implicates the access to the private key. Thus, you
somehow need to be able to directly or indirectly access the private key,
how else should you be able to sign?

Or do you mean that there merely is some (web) service you can send data to
and get the signature back without direct access to the private key? The
service would be the indirect access required, look for iText signing
examples with external signature generation.
