In an effort to reduce space requirements, I am looking for a way to find common elements such as fonts or images in a large number of pdf files and save them externally so they can be shared with other pdfs that use the same ones. Can this be done with iText? I will figure out the details myself, but would like to know if it's possible before I spend the time looking for it.
I have the book, but I couldn't find the answer there. The pdfs are created elsewhere, we merely store them in an archive, but the size of the archive is getting out of hand and this was one method we are looking at to reduce the storage size requirements. If iText isn't the correct tool for externalizing resources does anyone know of an existing one? We are considering writing our own, but that will be a last resort. And the idea would be that we would 'reassemble' the pdf back to its original state with the resources embedded before presenting it to an end user so that the user does not need to change the settings on the reader to use the external resources.
