Does that example work? It doesn't involve iText in any way. It just
performs a query on the database and it writes a result to a PrintStream.
It was written for one single purpose: to make sure people don't blame
HSQLDB configuration errors on iText ;-)
If this example doesn't work, please debug this example instead of a
more complex one.
(This principle is often referred to as "using Occam's razor.")
