Hi Andy,

Apologies for the delay...I have consulted with another designer here at
OSTC and we think that if you pre-save images to 8-bit you should see
better results. You can save images in png format in gimp for 8-bit output,
or Photoshop CS5 and up will display the bits under Image > Mode. This will
support transparency of 0 or 1 (on/off), but gradients will not look good
because 16 or 32-bit gives a smoother transition.

I also asked a visiting engineer who is working with QT. He can't advise on
which module to modify, and would actually recommend you to pre-convert all
the artwork. He doesn't see much of a benefit to do this "live" while the
system is running. It should be noted that dithering all artwork in the
running system will incur (possibly negligible) performance penalties.
