Well I started with only your second patch but this locked the bootup somehow. 
So I thought they maybe should be applied together... :)
Will give it an other try with only the 1st one ;)

I'm on a gentoo system & hotplug points its firmware-dir to
/lib/firmware ...
But I'll recheck this (tomorrow probably) ...

At least in older versions (till 0.4.2) PIO mode had to be set in order to get 
it working... (?)
