Solution: upgraded my kernel from 2.6.18 to 2.6.21-3

However, caution: The stereo is only with auxiliary audio input:
v4l2-ctl --set-audio-input 1
input 0 is still mono

also, another caution:
(although it could just be my cluelessness):
kernel options have been disappearing/changing, and some that are relevant to
ivtv apparently have been removed between kernel versions 2.6.18 and 2.6.21, so
"modprobe ivtv" failed to initialize the card, at first, but then, either
because i compiled additional modules or inserted the "video_buf" module, the
card initialized (though "Failed to load module saa7127").
