I'd like to put together some recommended values for
optimum performance out of ivtv, in particular with
respect to bitrate and resolution.

There was someone (Cory?) who ran the card
(specifically the saa7115) through some tests and
determined that it really can't distinguish between
720 horizontal pixels and 360 (or 352 or w/e). I'm not
sure if this took into account the mpeg compression or
not.

Anyhow, if 720x480 is way overkill, then all of us who
record at that size are wasting our valuable hard
drive space :)

Also, it would be nice to have some knowledgable
individuals run the mpeg codecs through some tests and
see which ones seem to behave the best. It would
probably be a good idea to include the firmware
version you tested at in your results.

With this in mind, here's the testing i'd like to do:

1) video decoder tests: optimum 'full-quality'
resolution settings for saa7115, and also for the
pvr150's decoder if possible. Ideally these would test
raw video not encoded video to eliminate muddiness
caused by the encoder.

2) codec tests: quality/bitrate, gop settings, etc.

3) advanced codec stuff: is it worth using any of the
built-in filters?

4) audio: 44.1 kHz vs 48kHz etc. Do they work? is 44.1
decent sounding? (CD's are 44.1 kHz right? they sound
pretty good to me :)

it'd also be nice to collect all this info on the
wiki.

anyone interested (in testing)? is someone so
interested that they want to run the project? I'll try
and invest what time i can, but it'd be nice if
someone with more time was interested

thanks
-tmk
