xawtv is apparently using some of the more advanced features of X to display the video smoothly out your pvr350 framebuffer.
The pvr350's tv-out was designed for OSD text, and we're using it as a screen - it works great for the most part, but lots of rapid updates (like video) give it troubles. if you can't get Xawtv to support plain ol' Xwindows, then give xine or mplayer a try in tv-mode. They are generally more flexible.
