I was waiting to make sure everything is stable before posting what I did but if you need help, let me know.   In short, I ended up modprobing saa7127 and cx25840 before loading ivtv and that did the trick... don't ask me why, I got the impression that ivtv loads the other modules without full respect for the module parameters or so. And you need to make sure you have the firmware for both the 350 and 500 in /lib/modules (using Gentoo here).   I'm running 0.3.4d, all is well so far, only thing I don't use (yet) is the video-out of the 350, might try this weekend.   W/
