I also tried a PVR-350, and it doesn't have a problem with black borders on any sides. My very old WinTV PCI card (one of the first gen) also doesn't have this problem - but records in very bad quality ;-)
AFIAK, black borders are not "normal" but also not a very big problem. What I plan on doing is during my export to DVD to apply a cropping filter. This is sort of a pain, but what can you do?
