Thanks Bryan; I have hacked this into ivtvctl and plan to invoke this every minute or so (is that a bad idea?). I now
see some evidence in the /var/log/messages file that ivtv_reset_ir_gpio is being called.

Yeah, the patch only added the ability to reset it, not to automatically reset it (since I don't think the driver actually knows when it goes bad). To actually do the reset, you need to call the ioctl with something like:
fd = open("/dev/video", O_RDWR);
ioctl(fd, IVTV_IOC_RESET_IR, null);
close(fd);
I can submit a patch to either ivtvctl or cx28540ctl to add this function if Chris says it is ok.
